* Definitions of ADA
- A 1990 federal law that forbids discrimination against persons who are disabled.
- This Act gives civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities; it impacts libraries as service providers and employers.
- Prohibits discrimination in the workplace against a handicapped person who is otherwise qualified. The act came into effect in 1992.
- 1990 Federal law establishing the civil rights of people with disabilities. Prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and requires common places used by the public to provide an equal opportunity for access.
- Federal civil rights legislation for disabled persons passed in 1990; calls on public transit systems to make their services more fully accessible as well as to underwrite a parallel network of paratransit service.
- Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires public buildings meet minimum standards and make reasonable accommodations for disabled persons. Multifamily dwellings may require an ADA review prior to rehabilitation design. Particular attention should b paid to architectural barriers in the assessment process.
- The ADA recognizes and protects the civil rights of people with disabilities and is modeled after earlier landmark laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race and gender. The ADA covers a wide range of disability, from physical conditions affecting mobility, stamina, sight, hearing, and speech to conditions such as emotional illness and learning disorders.
